Know the Pack You Lead

A big part of being the head of a pack - whether you're stepping in or have your own - is to know the members. Know who thinks they're in charge; show them you have taken that role. Know or learn what is needed to lead them; some dogs need different leadership than others. Just like humans in school, not everyone learns the same. 

Some dogs like a leader in the truest sense of the word; someone who literally leads, someone they can follow. Others prefer a leader as cattle need a herder.

The largest myth about being the dominant role with dogs is that you must always walk first. This is not true.

Think about it. When a Border Collie herds cattle or ducks, do they do that from the front? No. Are they still leading them where they want to go? Yes.

So when a member of your pack won't follow you where you want them to go, try leading a different way. You're still the dominant role, if you are giving direction.

Know how to lead your pack, however big or small it may be.

I know it's been ages, and I do apologize. I know, December was months and months ago, but I have been busy with all sorts of appointments due to that time of year. Between the gifting of little fuzzies - both young and old - and the nice weather incoming, my appointments are buzzing off the hook.

But never fear, I will always make sure to make time for everyone. So please do pick up the phone or send me an e-mail!

Ye Olde Christmas Season

December is one of the busiest times of the year for dog trainers. Most new appointments for the year come a little after Christmas because many people get new little fuzzballs as gifts.

Dogs are a huge responsibility, and should not be given lightly. Parents to their kids, and couples are great because they are a shared responsibility. Puppies are best given between those living within a home. You need to remember that taking a dog away, or giving it back is not a correct punishment for being irresponsible. A dog is a household responsibility, not just for one person. The dog would also be getting punished because someone may not have been right to receive them. That isn't their fault.

If you insist on giving a puppy, make it a rescue. There's no need to go out and spend top dollar on a dog. Every dog needs love and a forever home, but you can give a rescue pup a Christmas present too, simply by taking them home.

Give your new four legged friend a fair wag.

Again, dogs are a lot of work. You need to keep a clear head no matter how frustrated you may become. Puppies teethe, and will chew on anything. They don't know what money is, and how much things cost. And until they know to go bathroom outside, and how to tell you they want to go out, it's not fair to get upset about that either.

Again, sending them back should never be a thought, nor should it be a possibility.

All they know how to do is love you, and you should love them unconditionally no matter the trouble they get into. It's your job to teach them what their rules and boundaries are. And as they grow - just like kids - they will try to push them.

If things begin to get out of hand, seek help. Ask around for knowledgable people. Anyone who tells you it can't be changed or you should send the dog away isn't the right person to talk to.

Dogs and Your Demons

No matter how big or little your companion, they are always bigger than your demons; whether those demons are deep inside you, or out and around you.

Hope everyone's doing well, and having a great weekend with their dogs.

I finally got some time off and am spending this lovely weekend with my parents and their lovely puppies. It hasn't been too long, but last time I was home was last Thursday and we had to put one of the dogs down. So not a happy visit.

But enough about me.
